Non-Toxic Options for Restricted Areas, Public Lands, and Lead-Conscious Hunters
Lead-free 6.5 Creedmoor is a growing category. Unlike .17 HMR where lead-free options are limited to two active loads, the 6.5 CM market has multiple manufacturers producing monolithic copper and bonded non-toxic designs — driven by California’s lead ammunition regulations, expanding public land requirements in other states, and growing awareness among hunters about lead fragmentation near game meat.
This list covers the five best lead-free 6.5 Creedmoor factory loads currently in production in the US market. All five are fully non-toxic and meet lead-free requirements under California’s AB 711 regulations. Rankings are based on bullet design, published ballistic data, availability, and price-to-performance.

What Makes a 6.5 Creedmoor Load Truly Lead-Free
Not all “copper” or “non-toxic” marketing language means the same thing. For a load to qualify as lead-free under California regulations and similar mandates:
- The bullet must contain no lead — no lead core, no lead base, no lead tip
- The projectile is typically monolithic copper or copper-zinc alloy (Barnes TSX/TTSX/LRX, Hornady CX/GMX, Nosler E-Tip, Winchester copper)
- Standard bonded bullets like AccuBond, ELD-X, or Terminal Ascent are not lead-free — they use bonded lead cores
The loads on this list use monolithic or fully non-toxic bullet constructions that meet current lead-free requirements. If you’re hunting on public land with lead restrictions, verify your specific load against current regulations — requirements vary by state and land management agency.
#1 — Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 Creedmoor 127 gr LRX Boat Tail
The long-range lead-free choice. Highest BC of any lead-free 6.5 CM hunting load.
Barnes LRX (Long-Range X) is the long-range variant of Barnes’s TTSX design — a monolithic copper boat-tail bullet with polymer tip, optimized for high-BC performance past 400 yards. At 127 gr the LRX posts a published G1 BC of .468 — the highest in the lead-free 6.5 CM category. The monolithic copper construction eliminates lead fragmentation entirely while the polymer tip and boat-tail design maintain velocity at distance.
Advertised muzzle velocity is 2,825 fps from a 24″ test barrel. At 400 yards the LRX retains approximately 2,200 fps — above Barnes’s recommended minimum expansion velocity for the LRX design. For hunters who regularly shoot past 300 yards and need a lead-free load, this is the only factory option currently offering a BC above .450 in this caliber.
All-copper bullets generate higher bore pressure than lead-core equivalents. Most modern 6.5 CM rifles handle Barnes factory loads without issue, but always verify your specific firearm is rated for +P equivalent pressures before sustained use.
Best for: Long-range hunting (300–600 yards) in lead-restricted areas. The go-to lead-free load when shots past 400 yards are expected.

#2 — Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr TTSX Boat Tail
The all-around lead-free choice. Faster, flatter, and more widely available than the 127 gr LRX.
Barnes TTSX (Tipped Triple-Shock X) is the flagship lead-free hunting bullet from the company that essentially created the monolithic copper hunting bullet category. At 120 gr with a published G1 BC of .412, it is lighter and faster than the 127 gr LRX but offers slightly less wind resistance at extended range. The TTSX’s triple-shock grooves reduce bore pressure and copper fouling — a known issue with older all-copper designs.
Advertised muzzle velocity is 3,050 fps — the fastest lead-free 6.5 CM load on this list. At 300 yards it retains approximately 2,500 fps, well above minimum expansion velocity. The flat trajectory from the high muzzle velocity partially compensates for the lower BC compared to the LRX.
VOR-TX 120 gr TTSX is the most widely available lead-free 6.5 CM factory load at retail. If only one lead-free 6.5 CM load is in stock at any given retailer, it is usually this one.
Best for: Deer and similar game at all typical hunting ranges (50–400 yards). The default recommendation for lead-restricted area hunting in 6.5 Creedmoor.

#3 — Hornady Outfitter 6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr CX
Hornady’s lead-free hunting load. Copper alloy expanding bullet with Heat Shield tip — built for backcountry conditions.
Hornady Outfitter uses the CX (Copper alloy eXpanding) bullet — Hornady’s monolithic lead-free design that replaced the older GMX in 2022. The CX uses a Heat Shield polymer tip (same technology as ELD-X and ELD-M) to resist tip deformation at high velocity, improving BC consistency at long range compared to open-tip or flat-nose lead-free designs. Published G1 BC for the 120 gr CX is .450.
Advertised muzzle velocity is 3,050 fps, matching Barnes TTSX at the same bullet weight. The Outfitter line is also loaded with nickel-plated brass cases — designed for moisture resistance in wet backcountry conditions, making it a practical choice for hunters who store loaded rounds in a humid environment or carry ammunition in rough weather.
Best for: Backcountry hunting where moisture resistance matters, California condor zones, hunters who prefer Hornady’s CX design over Barnes TTSX. Comparable performance to VOR-TX at a similar price.

#4 — Federal Premium 6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr Trophy Copper
Federal’s lead-free option. Trophy Copper bullet in Federal’s premium line — polymer-tipped monolithic design.
Federal Trophy Copper uses a polymer-tipped monolithic copper bullet with a boat tail — similar construction philosophy to Barnes TTSX but Federal’s own design. At 120 gr with a published G1 BC of .430, it falls between TTSX (.412) and CX (.450) on paper. Advertised muzzle velocity is 3,050 fps, matching both Barnes and Hornady at this weight class.
Federal Premium Trophy Copper 6.5 CM is widely stocked through Federal’s distribution network, which means it’s frequently available at major retailers and big-box sporting goods stores when Barnes or Hornady lead-free loads are out of stock. Pricing is comparable to other premium lead-free loads at $55–70 per box of 20.
Terminal performance is competitive with TTSX and CX. All three 120 gr lead-free loads at similar velocity are functionally equivalent for deer and similar game inside 400 yards — the main differentiators at that point are availability and price.
Best for: Lead-restricted hunting, situations where Barnes and Hornady are unavailable. Good Federal alternative for hunters already using Federal ammunition.

#5 — Nosler E-Tip 6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr Lead-Free
The bonded-design lead-free option. E-Tip uses a different construction philosophy than monolithic copper.
Nosler E-Tip is a polymer-tipped bullet with a lead-free core — it does not use a traditional monolithic solid copper design. Instead, the E-Tip uses a gilding metal alloy jacket over a polymer core, with a bonded construction that prevents separation on impact. This gives it different terminal performance characteristics than full-copper monolithic designs: the E-Tip initiates expansion via the polymer tip and expands in a more controlled, less aggressive pattern compared to the petaling expansion of the TTSX or CX.
At 120 gr with a published G1 BC of .417, the E-Tip is ballistically competitive with Barnes TTSX. Advertised muzzle velocity is 3,050 fps. Nosler positions this as their non-toxic alternative for hunters who want Nosler’s controlled expansion philosophy without lead content.
E-Tip ammunition is available but less widely stocked than Barnes VOR-TX, Hornady Outfitter, or Federal Trophy Copper. It is a valid lead-free choice when in stock at a competitive price.
Best for: Lead-restricted areas, hunters who prefer Nosler’s controlled-expansion design philosophy, situations where other lead-free options are unavailable.

Loads That Didn’t Make the Top 5
Fiocchi Hyperformance 6.5 CM 120 gr Barnes Tipped TSX — Fiocchi loading of the Barnes TTSX bullet, functionally equivalent to VOR-TX at the same bullet weight. Usually priced higher than Barnes’s own loading. See the full report.
Winchester Deer Season XP Copper Impact 6.5 CM 125 gr — Winchester’s lead-free hunting load at a different weight class (125 gr). Uses Winchester’s copper polymer tip design. Widely available at Walmart and major retail. Worth considering if VOR-TX or Outfitter are out of stock. See the full report.
Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 CM 100 gr TTSX — the lightweight option for varmint applications or maximum velocity. Not recommended for deer-sized game due to the lower bullet mass. See the full report.
Remington Premier CUT 6.5 CM 120 gr Copper Tipped — Remington’s lead-free entry. Less widely available since Remington’s ownership changes; see the full report and check stock before planning around it.
Do Lead-Free Loads Require Different Zero or Holdovers?
Lead-free 6.5 CM loads at 120 gr typically run 150–200 fps faster than lead-core 140–143 gr hunting loads at the same bullet weight class. If you switch between lead-free and lead-core loads — for example, Hornady Precision Hunter 143 gr ELD-X as your standard load and Outfitter 120 gr CX for California hunting — you will need a separate zero for each load. The trajectory profiles are different enough at 200+ yards that holdovers from one do not transfer to the other.
Set a dedicated zero for your lead-free load before hunting season and verify it at 200 yards minimum.
FAQ
Are lead-free 6.5 Creedmoor loads legal in California?
Yes — all five loads on this list use fully non-toxic bullet constructions that meet California’s AB 711 requirements. Barnes TTSX, LRX, Hornady CX, Federal Trophy Copper, and Nosler E-Tip are all fully lead-free. Winchester Deer Season XP Copper Impact (in the honorable mentions) also qualifies. Always verify the specific load against DFW’s current approved list before hunting season, as the list is updated periodically.
Do all-copper bullets cause more barrel wear?
This is a frequently discussed topic. Monolithic copper bullets are harder than lead-core bullets and engage the rifling differently. Long-term research from military and civilian sources suggests that barrel wear from copper monolithic bullets is marginally higher than lead-core equivalents under identical conditions. For typical hunting use — a few hundred rounds per year — this is not a practical concern. For high-volume practice, use standard lead-core ammunition and reserve lead-free loads for actual hunting.
Why are all the top lead-free loads 120 gr instead of 140 gr?
Monolithic copper bullets are longer for a given weight than lead-core equivalents because copper is less dense than lead. A 120 gr copper bullet occupies as much case space as a 140 gr lead-core bullet of comparable design. Seating a 140 gr monolithic copper bullet to proper SAAMI OAL in 6.5 Creedmoor leaves very little powder space and may not feed reliably in all magazines. Manufacturers have settled on the 120–127 gr range as the practical weight limit for lead-free 6.5 CM factory loads.
Is the Hornady Superformance 120 gr CX a lead-free load?
Yes — see the full report. It uses the same CX bullet as Outfitter but at higher velocity via Superformance propellant. It was not included in the top 5 because the Outfitter CX at standard velocity already covers the use case well, and the Superformance version is priced higher for a velocity increment that does not translate to meaningful terminal performance improvement in the field. If you specifically want the highest-velocity lead-free 6.5 CM load, Superformance CX is worth reviewing.
