Velocity range note: Nosler publishes an effective operating range of 1,800–3,050 fps for the AccuBond — this means reliable terminal expansion is designed to occur within this velocity window. At 2,650 fps muzzle velocity and BC of 0.509, the bullet remains above the 1,800 fps expansion threshold to approximately 675 yards (calculated). Beyond that distance, reliable expansion cannot be guaranteed. For practical big game hunting inside 500 yards, this load operates well within its designed parameters.

Ballistics Table

Calculated. Zero: 100 yards. Sight height: 1.5″ above bore. BC (G1): 0.509 (Nosler AccuBond 140 gr, published).

YardsVelocity (fps)Energy (ft-lbs)Trajectory (in)
02,6502,183+1.5
1002,5011,9440.0 ← zero
2002,3601,732-7.4
3002,2281,543-21.7
4002,1021,374-44.1
5001,9841,224-76.0

Key takeaway: at 500 yards the load carries 1,224 ft-lbs — above the conventional minimum for elk — and remains above the 1,800 fps expansion threshold through an estimated 675 yards. The bonded construction ensures the bullet performs consistently on elk and moose through heavy bone regardless of shot angle. At 300 yards: 21.7 inches of drop, 1,543 ft-lbs retained — a capable long-range hunting profile.

The AccuBond Design

The Nosler AccuBond is Nosler’s flagship bonded polymer-tipped hunting bullet — introduced in 2003, it bridges the gap between the explosive Ballistic Tip and the traditionally slower Partition:

  • White polymer tip — Nosler’s signature color for AccuBond; initiates expansion on contact; improves BC vs open-tip designs
  • Bonded construction — the lead core is chemically fused to the tapered copper-alloy jacket; core and jacket stay together through bone impact
  • Boat-tail base — reduces base drag for the published BC of 0.509
  • Controlled mushroom — the tapered jacket controls expansion to approximately 1.5× original diameter with high weight retention
  • Effective velocity range: 1,800–3,050 fps — Nosler publishes this explicitly; few manufacturers do; the AccuBond is designed to expand reliably across a wide velocity span including reduced-velocity long-range impacts

The white polymer tip distinguishes AccuBond from the standard Ballistic Tip (orange at 6.5mm) and the AccuBond Long-Range (same AccuBond white tip, different jacket construction).

AccuBond vs AccuBond Long-Range vs Partition — Nosler’s Big Game Lineup

Nosler produces three bonded/premium hunting bullets for big game applications. Choosing the right one:

The AccuBond is the all-range choice — reliable from close timber shots through 500 yards. The AccuBond LR (Winchester Expedition load reviewed separately) uses a thinner jacket specifically for reduced-velocity expansion at 600–800 yards. The Partition uses a mechanical partition instead of bonding — less common in modern factory loads.

Variants

This page covers Nosler Trophy Grade 60080 · 6.5 Creedmoor · 140 gr AccuBond only.

Other Nosler 6.5 CM loads:

  • Nosler Trophy Grade 120 gr Ballistic Tip — deer/antelope, thin jacket
  • Nosler Trophy Grade 142 gr AccuBond LR — long-range bonded, higher BC
  • Nosler Match Grade 140 gr Custom Competition HPBT — match load
  • Nosler Match Grade 140 gr RDF HPBT — high-BC match load
  • Nosler E-Tip 120 gr — lead-free option

Best Uses

Good fit:

  • Elk, mule deer, and moose at 100–500 yards where bonded construction ensures reliable penetration on heavy bone at any shot angle
  • Hunters who specifically want Nosler AccuBond in factory-loaded form with Nosler’s own brass
  • All-range big game hunting — the 1,800–3,050 fps effective velocity window means the AccuBond performs from close-range high-velocity impacts to long-range reduced-velocity hits
  • Hunters who prefer a controlled expansion mushroom over explosive fragmentation on large game

Not the right tool for:

  • Lead-free requirements — lead-core bonded construction; see Nosler E-Tip for California
  • Precision match shooting — AccuBond is a hunting bullet
  • Budget hunting — at $3.07/round this is among the most expensive hunting loads in the series; Federal Terminal Ascent and Winchester Expedition ABLR deliver comparable bonded performance at lower prices
  • Self-defense — not designed or rated for it

Reliability Notes

No structured submissions yet.

General notes:

  • The Nosler AccuBond has been in production since 2003 and has an extensive field record on North American and African big game — among the most documented bonded polymer-tipped hunting bullets available
  • The 1,800–3,050 fps published velocity range is unusual transparency from Nosler — most manufacturers do not publish minimum expansion velocities; this is genuinely useful information for hunters planning long shots
  • Nosler Trophy Grade brass is the same premium material used across the Trophy Grade line; reloaders consistently rate it among the best-dimensioned factory brass available
  • At $3.07/round this is the most expensive non-lead-free hunting load in this report series — the premium reflects Nosler’s brand positioning and brass quality rather than performance advantages over competitive bonded loads at lower prices

Critical comparison: The Sig Sauer Platinum Hunter loads the identical Nosler AccuBond 140 gr bullet at 75 fps faster velocity for $5–8/box less. This is the most direct value comparison — same bullet, better velocity, lower price. The only reasons to prefer the Nosler Trophy Grade over Sig Platinum Hunter are brand loyalty, Nosler’s own brass quality, or “Made in USA by Nosler” preference.

Price Reality

  • Typical retail range: $61–65 per box of 20 (~$3.05–3.25/round) — most expensive non-lead-free hunting load in this series
  • vs. Sig Platinum Hunter (same AccuBond bullet): Sig runs $5–8/box less at higher velocity — the hardest comparison for this load to win on value
  • vs. Winchester Expedition AccuBond LR: Winchester runs $13–17/box less for a higher-BC bonded bullet — compelling value argument against this load
  • vs. Fiocchi Extrema Scirocco II (bonded, higher BC): Fiocchi runs $7–11/box less for higher BC at faster velocity
  • The Nosler brass justification: Trophy Grade brass commands a genuine premium in the reloading market; for reloaders who fire and reload 5+ times, the effective cost premium narrows
  • Fair price benchmark: under $63/box is reasonable if Nosler brass matters; above $68/box is difficult to justify against Sig Platinum Hunter or Winchester Expedition

FAQ

Nosler Trophy Grade AccuBond vs Sig Sauer Platinum Hunter AccuBond — same bullet, which to buy?

Both load the identical Nosler AccuBond 140 gr. Sig Platinum Hunter runs 75 fps faster (2,725 vs 2,650 fps) and costs $5–8/box less. The only advantages of buying Nosler Trophy Grade over Sig are: (1) Nosler’s own premium brass — Nosler Trophy Grade brass is superior to Sig’s case material for reloaders, (2) “Made in USA by Nosler” brand preference, and (3) potentially more consistent lot-to-lot loading from Nosler’s own facility. For hunters who don’t reload and prioritize value: Sig Platinum Hunter is the better buy. For reloaders who value Nosler brass: the premium may be justified.

What does the 1,800–3,050 fps velocity range mean for my hunting?

Nosler publishes that the AccuBond expands reliably when the bullet impacts between 1,800 and 3,050 fps. Below 1,800 fps, expansion may be incomplete; above 3,050 fps, excessive expansion fragmentation may occur. At 2,650 fps muzzle velocity and BC of 0.509, this load drops below 1,800 fps at approximately 675 yards. In practice, most hunters shoot inside 400–500 yards — well within the optimal expansion window. For truly long shots at 600+ yards, the AccuBond Long-Range (Winchester Expedition, Nosler Trophy Grade 142 gr ABLR) with its thin jacket designed for low-velocity expansion is the better tool.

AccuBond vs Partition for elk — which is better?

Both are excellent for elk. The Partition (one of Nosler’s original designs) uses a physical partition inside the bullet that prevents the front core from communicating with the rear core — deep penetration is guaranteed because the rear core stays intact even if the front jacket fragments. The AccuBond achieves similar penetration through bonding — core and jacket stay fused together. Modern AccuBond loads have largely replaced Partition use in factory ammunition because the bonded tip design offers higher BC and more consistent expansion; terminal performance on elk is comparable. For hunters with a specific preference for Partition behavior, those loads are available separately.

Is Nosler AccuBond appropriate for moose?

Yes — Nosler explicitly lists moose as an appropriate target in their product description. The bonded construction handles moose-sized game at appropriate hunting ranges. At 140 gr and 2,650 fps, the load generates 1,543 ft-lbs at 300 yards — above the minimum for moose with good shot placement. For moose inside 250 yards with broadside shots, AccuBond performs reliably. For longer shots or difficult angles on a bull moose, the AccuBond’s bonded construction is the right tool — more so than any non-bonded alternative.
