Methodology Ammo Reports

Ammo Reports is built on one principle: data without measurement conditions is noise. This page explains exactly how we collect, verify, and display information.

What is a submission

A submission is a single record tied to specific test conditions. Not a review, not an opinion, not a general impression. Every submission is linked to a specific load by UPC number or manufacturer SKU, and contains measurable parameters: firearm type, barrel length, average velocity, shot count, and temperature. Without these fields a submission does not pass moderation.

If the load you tested does not yet have a page on AmmoReports, submit anyway. Include the UPC number or SKU and all available data. We log every submission and attach it to the page when it goes live.

Subjective notes – malfunctions, accuracy impression, general observations – are welcome but stored separately from measurements and do not factor into aggregate calculations.

How average velocity is calculated

Average velocity for each load is computed as a simple arithmetic mean across all approved submissions for that SKU. Each submission contributes one value – the average velocity the user measured across their shot string.

At this stage all approved submissions for one SKU are pooled together regardless of barrel length or temperature. This is a temporary approach – as data volume grows we will introduce breakdowns by condition. This is why we ask for barrel length and temperature now even though the breakdown is not yet live: the data is already being saved.

Confidence levels

Every aggregate is displayed alongside a confidence level. This tells you how much weight to put on the number.

LevelSubmissionsWhat it means
Low1-2Early data – treat with caution
Medium3-6Sufficient for a general reference point
High7+A stable, reliable picture

We never hide the confidence level and never display an aggregate without it. If data is limited, we say so directly.

Standard deviation and extreme spread

SD and ES are displayed only when two conditions are met simultaneously: the submission includes at least 5 shots, and enough such submissions have accumulated to make the figure statistically honest. If the conditions are not met, these fields are not shown at all – no placeholders, no dashes implying data exists.

Many modern chronographs – Labradar, Garmin Xero C1 Pro, MagnetoSpeed – display SD automatically. If your device shows these figures, include them in the notes field when submitting.

Barrel length and temperature breakdowns

In a future update each load page will display data broken down by barrel length range and temperature range. For example: velocity from 3.0-3.5″ barrels, 3.6-4.0″ barrels, 4.1-4.5″ barrels – separately. Tests at below 40°F, 40-70°F, above 70°F – separately.

Until sufficient data exists for a breakdown, all submissions are pooled. This is why we collect barrel length and temperature from every submission now – the data is already there when the thresholds are reached.

Official manufacturer specifications

For each load we display manufacturer-stated specifications – advertised velocity, energy, bullet type. Sources are used in the following priority order:

  1. Official manufacturer website
  2. Established major retailer
  3. Calculated value – labeled explicitly
  4. Estimated value – labeled explicitly with explanation

If a spec is unavailable from any source we mark it with a dash and explain why. We do not invent specifications. If a retailer listing contains an obvious data error we flag it with a note and document our reasoning.

Moderation

All submissions are reviewed manually before publication. We check:

  • All required fields are present
  • Velocity falls within a realistic range for the caliber
  • No obvious mismatch between caliber, firearm type, and barrel length
  • No duplicate entries

Rejected submissions are almost always rejected for missing data, not because the result looks unusual. Unusual results interest us – provided the measurement conditions are fully documented.

What we do not do

  • We do not compare brands subjectively
  • We do not give recommendations on safe firearm handling
  • We do not publish reloading data – factory ammunition only
  • We do not display aggregates when data volume is insufficient for honest representation

Working with content creators

We are open to collaboration with YouTube channels, bloggers, and anyone who tests ammunition in the field. If you shoot with a chronograph and document your conditions, your tests can become part of the Ammo Reports database. We can link to your videos directly on the relevant load pages – your audience grows, and our users see real-world tests alongside structured data.

We are interested in any format: video channels, podcasts, written reviews, forums. The only requirement is that tests are conducted with a chronograph and conditions are documented. If you are interested in working together, get in touch.

The “Where to Buy” block on every load page contains affiliate links to retailers. If you click one and make a purchase, the retailer pays us a small commission. Your price does not change – you pay exactly what you would pay going directly to the store.

This revenue keeps the project running – it covers hosting, moderation time, and ongoing development. We disclose affiliate links openly because they have no influence on data, ratings, or any editorial content on this site. Which retailers offer affiliate programs and which do not has no bearing on what appears on a load page.

Data on this site is for reference purposes only. Results vary by firearm, barrel condition, ammunition lot, and environmental factors. Ammo Reports does not guarantee the accuracy of user-submitted data.
